When many think of holistic health, they tend to think of singular healing techniques like herbal remedies, clean eating, mental health practices, or spiritually driven exercises, like yoga. However, holistic approaches to optimal health incorporate all aspects of the mind, body, and spirit. In fact, a holistic focus is a focus on the body as a whole. Applying their knowledge of the inter-connected pathways of each bodily function, holistic health professionals aim to create symbiosis, or balance, to heal the body as an entirety. While other believe they only have “one” health issue, holistic health professionals understand that any singular issue is affecting multiple functions throughout the body. Cason Lehman, Omni Balanced Life Center’s new Holistic Health Coach, shares his thoughts with us today on holistic healing:
OMNI: “What are the biggest misconceptions you hear when it comes to holistic health care?”
CASON: “Holistic, or wholeness, means that nothing [in the body] is separate… So, the biggest misconception I see is folks see their health goal as separate from themselves.”
OMNI: “Would you say healing holistically is sustainable, and what are the benefits of doing so?”
CASON: “Yes! We all tend to become over analytical [and stressed]. This puts us in the fight or flight nervous system. The problem is when we continually run in this default mode, overtime we experience burnout, disharmony, and dis-ease in our body. Not sustainable. When we look at our system from a holistic perspective, we look at things from a wider lens. This allows us to see patterns that are not sustainable. With the proper tools and treatments, we can more easily fix the problem in a sustainable way.”
OMNI: “What is a piece of advice you would give to a chronically ill person who is interested in holistic approaches to healing?”
CASON: “Take a deep breath, or 25 of them…haha. After calming your body down with the very thing that keeps you alive, bring your focus to your heart. Bring up a memory, a person, a place, or thing that inspires a heart-felt loving emotion. Then feel that emotion. Then feel it more. Feel your heart. Take it to your body and embody that loving emotion. You are now feeding every cell of your body this emotion, biochemically. In science, this is called psychoneuroimmunology. As we teach our body to feel this more than a fearful emotion, we are literally changing our genetic expression… and HEALING!”
