Diabetes, Pre-Diabetes and Insulin Resistance – What do these terms really mean? Are you at risk and not even aware? Are there Natural Solutions that you could be implementing right now to prevent this condition from happening?
Let’s dive in! According to the American Diabetes Association the statistics of Diabetes and Pre-diabetes are staggering. In 2015 30.3 Million Americans or 9.4% of the population had been diagnosed with diabetes.
Diabetes is the condition in which the body does not properly process food for use as energy. Most of the food we eat is turned into glucose, or sugar, for our bodies to use for energy. The pancreas, an organ that lies near the stomach, makes a hormone called insulin to help glucose get into the cells of our bodies. When you have diabetes, your body either doesn’t make enough insulin or can’t use its own insulin as well as it should. This causes sugars to build up in your blood.
Pre-Diabetes and Insulin Resistance are basically terms that describe metabolic condition that are leading you down the wrong path straight to a head on collision with a full blown diabetic condition.
The issues that go along with elevated blood sugar are that over time it will damage nerve and blood vessels that will lead to complications such as obesity, heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney failure and worse. Studies have shown that most people with a prediabetic condition will develop type 2 diabetes within 10 years unless they change their lifestyle.
There is a SOLUTION!!! I love to live in the solution. The first step is to realize where you’re at on this spectrum. Better yet anyone and everyone should pay attention because we are all at risk if we are eating fast food of any kind, drinking soda, eating processed foods and taking in large amounts of sugar (keep a food log and really take an inventory of how much sugar you are taking in, you will be surprised).
Through diet, eating more vegetables (organic if possible), lean meats (organic if possible), minimal fruits, and exercise, this condition can be halted right in it’s tracks. This might sound too simple. For some that have already crossed some lines it is in fact more complicated than this in terms of reversing the condition, but it can be done with the right guidance from professionals who understand that Food is Medicine! We can all get off to a good start by taking a look at the Grand design of our bodies and what the original God given intent was for it and how we are to treat it! It is an amazing vessel and we have the control over how to use it. Let’s get back to basics and use food as fuel. As we have sometimes heard “we are to eat to live, not live to eat”. We wouldn’t think to put mucky water in the gas tanks of our cars and expect them to run properly right? I know it’s a simple analogy, but it is sad to say we take better car of our cars sometimes than we do our bodies. We don’t get a new body in this lifetime – cars come and go – get traded in for new – but we do not have that luxury with our earthly vessel.
Diabetes is just one of many pathologies that have a strong connection to the food we put into our bodies. We can overcome these diseases or better yet – we don’t have to get them in the first place.
